Materials Needed

The Kite Festival by Leyla Torres, template of sled kite, string, tape, and scissors.

Part 1: Read-aloud

Part 2: Discussion

Ask the students if they have ever flown a kite? Have you ever made a kite? Today you will get to make your own kite and fly it.

Part 3: Activity

  1. Provide each student with a sled kite template
  2. Show students examples of paper maps that they will be using to create a sled kite
  3. Have students construct a kite
  4. Allow students to try flying their kite using a breeze outside during recess

Part 4: Summary

Today you learned about how to make a kite and fly it. (Depending on the success of the flying, you might talk about the need for wind to fly a kite.)
